Medication Adherence: How Important is It?

Medication nonadherence is the most prevalent and complex problem. Nonadherence to medication causes considerable morbidity and mortality, with unavoidable health care costs.1 In 2003, it was estimated by the World Health Organization (WHO) that in developed countries, adherence averages to only 50% in patients suffering from chronic medical illness while in developing countries, the problem is greater.2,3
